I appear to be awash with good news today and this week. The English MA program director at Boston College just gave me a call and said they'd accepted me into the program. Woot!
Apparently they won't have their funding worked out until the beginning of next month, so no promises there, which is unfortunate; however, he thought it was likely that I would get funding, so cross your fingers for me, eh?

Yeah, the snow is a big strike against it. But it seems like a wonderful city, and the program is awesome, so...

I really hope not, because I was completely blindsided by it and feel like I made a real idiot out of myself, not knowing what to say at first. I think I recovered by the end of the conversation, but I just wanted to say, "Can you hold on while I scream for a minute, then I'll get back to you and sound more sane?"
But they probably get the blithering idiot thing a lot if they do that to everyone, so I guess that's okay.

I actually felt completely shocked, but...yes? This funding is the merit-based stuff, too, so I still have a shot at need-based if it doesn't work out, I think. *crosses fingers*

I'm not seeing anyone at the school (it's Good Friday, so probably no one will be there, but I have the day off), but we thought we'd just look around, see what the campus is like, check out nearby areas to see where I might like to live if I don't end up in campus housing, just generally get a feel for the place. (Also, I have practically no experience driving on interstates, and my dad's insisting that change, so.) Did you live off-campus ever? Are there particular areas that grad students tend to like? I'll probably have a car, but if I could walk to and from campus, that would be awesome. (The English department is located in McClung Tower, although that may just be offices...dunno how they assign classroom space over there.)

Date: 2008-03-15 03:18 pm (UTC)Long story short, I know some good off-campus housing... and no classes are in McClung. Yours will probably be in HSS, which is the humanities building next to McClung. (Unfortunately, all classes get scattered across campus haphazardly.)

To visit those, go down cumberland avenue (the main street) towards downtown, and take a right onto henley street. go across that bridge and turn left immediately after burger king. Northwood is on your right (I lived there) and Crossing Point is on your left. I also lived in Sterling University Heights, which also has regularly-running bus service... the directions are a little more confusing to get there but Mapquest Knotty Pine Way.
Some grad students lived in the upperclassman apartment-style dorm (Andy Holt Apts) but I wouldn't suggest it.
What I would suggest? a meal plan. The dining services program is fabulous.

Hmmm. The lazy part of me likes that idea, but I'm thinking doing my own food would be cheaper, maybe? I didn't realize there were universities out there who would let you on the meal plan without living on campus, though, so that's pretty awesome.
