icepixie: ([DS9] Julian and Jadzia in a turbolift)
From: [personal profile] icepixie
Oh, Star Treks. TNG, Voyager, and DS9 were my first, second, and third fandoms, respectively, when I was twelve or so. I think TNG had just gone off the air when I got into it, and Voyager was in S2, so DS9 was in...S4 or 5, maybe. I had an RL Trekiverse RPG with some of my friends in eighth grade before I even know what RPGs were. I wrote my first fics for those shows (including this 40,000-word Julian/Jadzia EPIC that remains unfinished for extremely good reasons).

At the time, I definitely exhibited the pattern I do with other ensemble shows, just amped up because I was a teenager: adore everyone, but really glom onto a couple of the female characters and fic the hell out of them.

I eventually went off Voyager in particular and the franchise as a whole, really, when I discovered Farscape, and thus storytelling that had consequences and arcs and realistic character development. (Well, DS9 eventually got these. But not from the beginning.) You're right that Voyager and DS9 both had a community theme; for Voyager, though, it was mishandled SO BADLY that I almost don't want to acknowledge it. A couple of years ago, I gave some thought to what I would've liked to have seen on the show, and...it came out looking a lot like new BSG. *g* Or like Macedon and Peg's Talking Stick/Circle series, which was just incredible, and exactly like it should've been.
